Chin Liposuction

What is chin liposuction?

Chin liposuction or as it's professionally known in the surgical industry, submental liposuction, is a surgical procedure which offers a permanent reduction in excess fat from under the chin, also known as the submental area as well as the jaw. Fat in this area can be genetic or accumulated from a number of medical conditions or general ageing. The fat is removed via a small, thin tube called a cannula and can also be used to reduce the appearance of jowls.

Chin liposuction is a quick and effective way to reduce submental fat and improve the appearance of what is typically referred to as a double chin. Despite some people's efforts of maintaining a slim physique or working hard to lose weight, stubborn fat under the chin can persist even with the healthiest of diets and strictest of exercise regimes, making surgical removal a popular option.

This procedure is often paired with skin tightening treatments, dermal fillers, or chin implant surgery to further enhance jawline definition and create a sharper, more sculpted look. Increasingly, surgeons are incorporating energy-assisted liposuction techniques such as ultrasonic VASER lipo to break down fat more efficiently, reducing recovery time and swelling.

Some patients also combine chin liposuction with FaceTite, a radiofrequency-based treatment that partially melts fat, firms the skin, and strengthens connections between the skin and underlying neck muscles to tighten the submental area. This approach not only makes fat removal easier but also enhances the final results, leading to a more refined and contoured appearance.

How much does chin lipo cost

Chin liposuction in Australia is generally considered expensive in comparison to other parts of the world, typically costing between $5,000AUD and $6,600AUD, depending on the size of the area, the amount of fat being removed and the type of liposuction being used. Some clinics may offer variations in pricing for smaller chin and neck liposuction procedures. Additional procedures like skin tightening or Botox injections can also add to the total price of the procedure. The average cost for chin liposuction in the United States is between $3,000USD and $5,000USD, but can cost significantly more if a highly reputable surgeon with liposuction expertise has been selected. Chin liposuction in Mexico, specifically in cities like Queretaro, Tijuanna or Guadalajara, can be significantly more affordable than in the United States. Neck liposuction which often addresses the double chin, can cost around $400USD. Chin liposuction in Turkey typically costs between $1,500USD and $2,500USD. This price range, though higher than Mexico is generally lower than in the US, Australia or Europe, making it an attractive option for medical tourism.

How is chin liposuction performed

Generally performed under local anesthesia and light sedation, chin lipo is done through a small incision being created under the jaw (submental.) This will allow for the surgeon to come in with their canular to perform the liposuction to the area. Once inserted, the canula works via suction, removing the unwanted fat from under the chin, around the jaw and the neck. Once sufficient fat removal has taken place, the surgeon will then suture the incision back up and usually place a compression bandage or chinstrap over the area to support the skin while healing takes place.

There are various methods of liposuction that are used in this procedure today, here are some of the most typical examples:

Tumescent Liposuction: This involves injecting a solution of saline and local anesthetic into the area before fat removal. The solution is said to help with bleeding, swelling and pain.

Vaser Liposuction: This uses ultrasound energy to break down the fat cells in advance, making fat removal easier and allowing less trauma to the surrounding tissues while suctioning.

Microlipo: A minimally invasive technique that uses a very small cannula for fat removal.  This is perfect for removing unwanted fat from the chin area and other small areas where precision is important.

As well as lipo there are several other nonsurgical ways of removing fat such as CoolSculp, Kybella and Emsculpt which will be explored in other posts.

How to prepare for chin liposuction?

To prepare for chin liposuction, it's important to schedule multiple consultations with board-certified plastic surgeons in order to select one you're most happy with and trust to perform the procedure. In your consultations you should discuss your medical history and they should be made aware of any medications you're taking. Your surgeon will likely advise you to quit smoking, avoid excessive alcohol consumption and to be at a stable weight, your ideal weight, as this can have an effect on the longevity of the procedure. They will also provide you with pre-operative instructions and information on what to expect during your recovery phase. Additionally, you should arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours as you'll be in a bit of pain and won't want to be moving around too much. Your surgeon should also help prepare you with what to have in your home regarding recovery supplies.

What are the risks and possible side effects for chin liposuction procedure?

Chin liposuction is minimally invasive and therefor relatively safe. None the less, there are some risks which are important to be aware of. Some common side effects which arise from having this procedure include swelling, bruising, and temporary numbness. More serious risks and complications, rare as they may be, include infection, blood clots, nerve damage and permanent uneven skin texture.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

Swelling and Bruising: Mostly localized, these are common and typically subside within a few weeks.

Temporary Numbness: Numbness in the chin or neck area can occur due to nerve irritation and usually resolves within a few weeks but can persist longer in some cases.

Infection: Infections can occur at the incision sites and may require treatment with antibiotics.

Blood Clots: Rarely, blood clots can form and in worst cases potentially travel to the lungs, requiring medical attention.

Nerve Damage:

Nerve injury can lead to pain, numbness, or changes in skin sensation. If minor this should resolve on its own but more extensive nerve damage could be permanent.

Uneven Skin: Skin texture irregularities, including dimpling, indentation, or hardness, can occur if the fat is not removed evenly or if skin elasticity is poor.

Asymmetry: Slight asymmetry in the results is possible, especially if the fat removal is not precise. Depending on the situation, a second surgery could be useful in rectifying this.

Scarring: Scarring at the incision sites can occur, but the severity usually depends on individual healing and the surgeon's technique.

Loose Skin:

In some cases, the skin may not retract fully after fat removal, resulting in loose skin or a "saggy" appearance. Skin tightening may be necessary to rectify this.

Fluid Buildup: Seromas (fluid collections under the skin) or hematomas (blood collections) can occur and may require drainage.

How long does liposuction last?

Liposuction results are generally permanent as the fat cells removed are not replenished. However, the longevity of the results depends on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and stable weight. If you maintain a similar weight after liposuction, the sculpted shape can last for many years. If you gain a lot of weight or gain weight very suddenly, the fat cells could replenish in the chin area undoing the procedure. It's advised to avoid weight gain as much as possible to maintain the results from the procedure.

How long is recovery from chin liposuction

The typical time to recover from chin liposuction is usually around 3 to 4 weeks. In saying that, you should be able to resume most normal activities within a week or two, though strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks. Complete healing and final results can take up to 3 months.

Here's a more detailed look at the recovery timeline:

First few days: Swelling, bruising and some discomfort are common and typically peak during this time. The pain can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication. Your surgeon will also likely recommend you wear a compression bandage or chin strap through this time.

First week: Most patients can return to work or school, though a compression garment may still be needed.

1-2 weeks: You'll start to see noticeable improvements in swelling and you should be able to resume most normal daily activities.

2-3 weeks: You'll still be required to skip strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exercise for at least 2-3 weeks to allow proper healing.

3-4 weeks: Incisions should be completely healed, swelling will be minimal at this stage and bruising should also be completely gone.

3 months: Final results should be visible as residual swelling fully resolves and the skin finishes retracting.

FAQs

Is this procedure painful?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort rather than acute pain. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage any discomfort during the initial recovery period.

How long until I see final results?

While initial changes are visible within weeks, the final refined results typically take several months as the body continues to heal and settle.

Will I have visible scars?

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize scarring. Most incisions are placed in natural creases or inconspicuous locations, and scars typically fade over time.
