Coolsculpting

What is Coolscultping

CoolSculpting is a noninvasive procedure designed to contour the body by using cryolipolysis, a fat-freezing technique that targets and reduces stubborn fat deposits. This treatment works by freezing and destroying fat cells while leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed. In the weeks following the procedure, the body naturally processes and permanently eliminates the damaged cells.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved CoolSculpting for use on various areas of the body where stubborn fat accumulates, including the abdomen, flanks (commonly known as love handles), upper arms, back and bra fat, inner and outer thighs, and buttock rolls (also called banana rolls). Additionally, a smaller applicator known as the CoolMini has been FDA-cleared for treating submental fat, often referred to as a double chin, as well as submandibular fat beneath the jawline.

Beyond its FDA-approved applications, many providers utilize CoolSculpting off-label to refine the appearance of areas such as the knees, hips, and mons pubis (a fatty, cushiony area of tissue located in front of the pubic bone, in both males and females.) This body sculpting treatment can be used on its own or as a complementary procedure to enhance surgical fat removal. It serves as an effective spot treatment following liposuction, helping to refine and improve more dramatic surgical outcomes.

Consulting with an experienced provider who specializes in fat reduction treatments is the best way to determine whether CoolSculpting is the right option. However, it is important to note that this procedure is not intended for weight loss or as a treatment for obesity but more so for spot reducing fat from stubborn areas.

How much does Coolsculpting cost

Coolsculpting prices in Australia vary depending on the clinic, the area being treated, and the number of treatments needed. Expect to pay around $650AUD per session, but some clinics offer package deals with prices starting as low as $212AUD per area. Some clinics may offer discounts for multiple treatments. In the US, CoolSculpting costs vary, but the average range is $2,000USD to $4,000USD per treatment area. A single treatment can cost anywhere from $750USD to $6,600USD, with the average cost around $3,200USD.

In Mexico, a CoolSculpting session can cost around $300USD with the average price range being from $300USD to $11,500USD, depending on the area and specific treatment. In Turkey, cryolipolysis (Coolsculpting) costs about $900USD per session.

How is Coolsculpting performed

During the procedure, you'll lie down while your provider identifies and marks the target areas with a pen. To protect your skin, a gel pad is placed over the treatment site before an applicator is applied. Depending on the type of applicator used, some may incorporate a vacuum mechanism to pull in the skin and fat, while others use pulsing pressure.

As the applicator works, it lowers the tissue temperature to -10ºC. This intense cold can be uncomfortable initially, but the sensation subsides once the area becomes numb. When the treatment session concludes, the applicator is removed, and the provider massages the frozen fat to help smooth out the area and stimulate the body’s natural elimination of the damaged fat cells. Some doctors refer to this frozen fat as a "butterstick" due to its resemblance to a solid lump of butter.

To further enhance this step, some professionals use the Zimmer Z-Wave Pro, a device that emits shockwaves to soften the treated area after CoolSculpting.

The duration of a CoolSculpting session typically ranges from 35 to 60 minutes, depending on the number and size of the areas being treated, as well as the type of applicators used. Some providers offer DualSculpting or CoolSculpting Elite, which allows multiple areas to be treated at the same time, effectively reducing the overall treatment time.

How to prepare for Coolsculpting

As Coolsculpting is a noninvasive procedure, there is little to do in terms of preparation prior to your appointment. Procedures like these are often referred to in the cosmetic community as lunch time appointments, this is because you can simply pop in to have the treatment on your lunch break and head straight back to work afterwards. To prepare for your CoolSculpting appointment, wear comfortable, loose clothing, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements, and stay hydrated. Eat a light meal before your appointment and consider bringing something to do to keep you entertained during the procedure.

What are the risks and possible side effects of having Coolsculpting

CoolSculpting, being noninvasive is generally safe and effective but it does carry some risks and potential side effects that you should be aware of. Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, and sensitivity in the treated area. More serious, but less common, side effects include paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), where the treated area develops a bulge instead of reducing fat, and nerve damage leading to numbness or prolonged pain, this is however extremely rare.

Common Side Effects:

Temporary redness, swelling, and bruising: These are common and usually resolve within a few days or weeks.

Sensitivity and numbness: Some patients may experience decreased sensation or tingling in the treated area, which is also usually temporary.

Pain or discomfort: Aching or stinging sensations may occur during or after the procedure but will likely resolve on its own.

Skin discoloration: Temporary redness or darkening of the skin can also occur but should also clear up on its own within a few days.

How long do Coolsculpting results last

The effects of CoolSculpting can last indefinitely, provided that you maintain a stable weight. Once the treated fat cells are destroyed, they do not regenerate, but the remaining fat cells in the area can still enlarge if weight is gained. Significant weight fluctuations may even result in uneven fat distribution, altering the contours of the treated areas.

To preserve and maximize the benefits of the procedure, adopting a balanced diet and staying active are essential.

How long is recovery from Coolsculpting

Most people can resume their regular activities immediately after a fat freezing treatment, though recovery varies based on individual responses and the number of treated areas. While downtime isn't typically necessary, some temporary effects can occur.

It’s common to experience mild soreness or swelling in the treated region, which may last for a few days. During the first 24 hours, it's best to avoid intense physical activity or heavy lifting to prevent exacerbating swelling. Some providers suggest wearing Spanx or a compression garment to reduce discomfort, while others recommend loose-fitting clothing. Consulting your provider can help determine the best option for you.

Around five days after the procedure, you might feel occasional nerve sensations in the treated area. This could manifest as tingling, cramping, or stinging as the nerves begin to heal. If these sensations persist for more than a few days or become particularly painful, speaking with a healthcare professional about pain relief options is advisable.

One to two weeks post-treatment, itching in the affected area is a common response due to histamine activity during fat cell elimination. This can be managed with oral antihistamines if necessary. Numbness usually subsides within three weeks as nerve function gradually returns.

Over the next three to four months, your body will continue to process and expel damaged fat cells. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining regular exercise will support this natural elimination. Swelling from CoolSculpting generally resolves within two weeks but may persist for up to a month.

To help reduce swelling, a combination of compression garments, proper hydration, and movement can be beneficial. For those seeking a more aggressive enhancement, wearing a waist trainer overnight for two to three weeks can further aid the recovery process.

Noticeable changes typically begin to appear about a month after the procedure, with more pronounced results emerging within two to three months following the final session.

How effective is Coolsculpting

Scientific research confirms that CoolSculpting is effective in reducing fat. A study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery demonstrated that the procedure decreases fat cell volume in the treated area by anywhere between 14.7% and 28.5%. Similarly, clinical trials sponsored by the device manufacturer reported a 20–25% reduction in fat-layer thickness following a single session. Patient satisfaction is generally highest for treatments targeting the inner thighs, while results in the abdominal area tend to receive lower ratings.

For certain individuals, CoolSculpting delivers impressive results with success depending on selecting the right candidates and managing expectations. There is a lot to be said for selecting a skilled provider, as the outcome relies heavily on precise planning and assessment rather than simply applying the device.

While CoolSculpting is not specifically designed to treat cellulite, it may enhance skin appearance in some patients by reducing fat deposits that contribute to dimpling and uneven texture. It is also not intended to tighten loose skin although, each treatment can result in a mild degree of skin tightening. Findings from a 2021 study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal observed a significant increase in type I collagen following cryolipolysis. Though this boost in collagen can lead to slight skin firming, those seeking more dramatic tightening should consult their provider about additional treatment options.

FAQs

Is this procedure painful?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort rather than acute pain. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage any discomfort during the initial recovery period.

How long until I see final results?

While initial changes are visible within weeks, the final refined results typically take several months as the body continues to heal and settle.

Will I have visible scars?

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize scarring. Most incisions are placed in natural creases or inconspicuous locations, and scars typically fade over time.
