PRF Platelet Rich Fibrin

PRF Platelet Rich Fibrin

PRF is created using a slower centrifugation process compared to PRP. This method allows for a higher concentration of platelets, white blood cells and creates a fibrin matrix This matrix acts like a scaffold, gradually releasing growth factors over time. Growth factors are released over time giving longer lasting results compared to PRP.

PRF Platelet Rich Fibrin

What is PRF (Platelet Rick Fibrin)

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) treatments are designed to rejuvenate the skin and promote hair growth by harnessing the power of platelets and growth factors. These components enhance cellular function, stimulate stem cell activity, and encourage the production of elastin and collagen, which are essential for maintaining firm, youthful skin. PRF also accelerates the body's natural healing process, making it a valuable tool for tissue repair.

Recent studies highlight its effectiveness, and PRF is frequently combined with cosmetic treatments such as microneedling—often referred to as a PRF facial—fat transfer, and hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. Depending on the treatment goal, PRF can either be applied topically or injected into the skin, a method known as i-PRF, which specifically targets signs of aging.

This therapy is commonly used to treat areas such as the face, neck, and hands, particularly for concerns like under-eye discoloration, thinning skin, and loss of firmness. It can help even out skin tone, improve texture, minimize acne scars, brighten the under-eye area, soften fine lines, and promote a more youthful complexion. In addition to skin benefits, PRF injections in the scalp support hair restoration by stimulating hair growth in individuals with thinning hair or androgenetic alopecia.

Beyond its cosmetic applications, PRF is also utilized in sports medicine to alleviate joint pain and facilitate faster healing in injured tissues. Its ability to boost cellular regeneration makes it a versatile treatment for both aesthetic and medical purposes.

Difference between PRF and PRP

Generally speaking PRF is considered the upgraded version of PRP. With both PRP and PRF, blood is drawn in the same way but what happens after this is what makes the difference.

With PRP, blood is drawn from a patients arm and spun in a centrifuge very rapidly with a coagulant used to separate the platelet rich plasma. With PRF, the blood is spun much slower and no coagulant is used. Spinning the blood slower, the fibrin is more easily separated from the rest of the blood.

As PRF is processed without any additives, the fibrin is allowed to form a fibrin matrix which is responsible for releasing growth factors, white blood cells and stem cells which promote growth of collagen and all the other antiaging benefits.

The coagulant used in PRP is said to interfere with wound healing so PRF is said to be a more natural alternative, being performed without any additives. PRF appears to yield better results for antiaging and acne scarring because of the higher amount of growth factors it contains.

How much does PRF cost

In Australia, you can expect to pay somewhere between $450AUD to $750AUD per session and treatment area.

In the US, PRF treatments will usually cost you between $300USD to $2,500USD per session and treatment. In Mexico surprisingly, the cost for this treatment is quite comparable to prices in the USA. PRP on the other hand, being more affordable.

Prices for PRF in Turkey are significantly less usually starting at around $150USD - $300USD. Given that the cost is 60% less for this procedure that it is in other countries many people from USA, Europe and Australia seek to have this treatment performed there.

How is PRF Performed

The process of preparing platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for skin and hair rejuvenation is still evolving, with providers refining protocols to optimize results. Typically, the treatment begins with a blood draw, usually extracting two vials from the patient’s arm. The collected blood is then placed in a centrifuge, where it is spun at a controlled speed for anywhere between three and ten minutes, depending on the specific approach used by the provider. During this time, a numbing cream is applied to ensure the procedure remains comfortable.

As the centrifuge completes its cycle, the blood separates into three distinct components. Platelet-poor plasma rises to the top and is discarded, while red blood cells settle at the bottom and are also removed. The valuable platelet-rich fibrin forms in the middle and is carefully extracted for use. Once processed, the PRF is either injected into the targeted treatment area or applied topically, typically in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure such as microneedling.

Since techniques can vary significantly between providers, it is essential to have a thorough consultation before undergoing the treatment. This allows for a clear discussion of the specific protocol being used, ensuring the patient understands the process and what to expect.

How to prepare for PRF treatment

Being a minimally invasive treatment, there isn't much in terms of preparation for a PRF treatment. The main thing is to discuss your skin care with your provider as there may be some products with active ingredients you may need to stop a few days prior to your treatment. Besides this, you may need to book a few days off work or other commitments as you may be a little red after treatment.

Focus on staying hydrated, eating well and avoid smoking prior to your treatment to ensure a speedy healing response to your PRF treatment. Another thing to consider is taking vitamin C supplements prior to your treatment which can also promote supplements.

What are some of the risks and possible side effects of PRF

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) appears to be a safe treatment overall, with minimal risk of complications. The most common side effects include slight bruising, redness, and swelling at the injection site. The delicate under-eye area is particularly susceptible to swelling, which may persist for up to five days before gradually resolving.

Like any injectable procedure, mild inflammation and tenderness can occur but should fade within a few hours. Proper aftercare can help minimize discomfort and support the healing process.

How long do results from PRF last

In one small study published in 2023, it was ascertained that PRF under eye treatment results will still visible 3 months later. Improvements included a reduction in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, along with a “refreshed appearance.”

PRF results last longer when paired with other procedures. For instance, one study found that PRF treatments paired with nanofat transfer lasted at least one full year. Improvements were sustained for more than 12 months in the test group compared with 1 month in the control group. It's generally accepted that multiple sessions are required on a schedule (say 3 or 6, spaced 6-8 weeks apart.) Then results can maintained with a top up annually or every 6 months.

For hair loss, it's recommended to have 4 monthly sessions topped up bi annually after that,

How long is recovery from a PRF treatment

There is usually no down time after PRF as it's a minimally invasive procedure. Some slight tenderness at the site where blood was drawn from may be present as well as in the spots the PRF was injected. If microneedling was performed at the same time, some mild redness may persist for a few days after having this treatment. This will usually resolve within a day though.

FAQs

Is this procedure painful?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort rather than acute pain. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage any discomfort during the initial recovery period.

How long until I see final results?

While initial changes are visible within weeks, the final refined results typically take several months as the body continues to heal and settle.

Will I have visible scars?

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize scarring. Most incisions are placed in natural creases or inconspicuous locations, and scars typically fade over time.
